Trying Something New

I tried to make some homemade granola today and lets just say the first batch was pretty burnt. I tried a different recipe that had homemade maple syrup, honey, and spices and that one turned out way better. We added mini chocolate chips, dried cherries, dried coconut and walnuts. It is pretty delicious. Defiantly learned from my mistakes on this one and will make more in the future. Evan loves his granola and he approves of this one.

Bees!

We are so ready for spring. Hives are done and sealed. I started planting some herbs and will start winter sowing soon to start plants for the bees/chickens come spring. I cant wait to get outside and enjoy the longer days.

Feeding the girls and Roo some warm oatmeal with cinnamon and cayanne pepper before bed to keep them a little warmer. See poor Chick chick who has missing feathers in her head. Poor girl. She still holds her own and drop kicks the other hens if they tick her off. Hoping she does good this weekend when we will see -25 windchill. I don't know about you but I am so ready for spring.

Chicken Poop!

Who knew there was chicken poop lip junk! Well its a real thing and its awesome stuff. All natural, lavender scented. No there is not real poop in it :)

Eli - 1 month TODAY

Guess who turned 1 month old today! Little Eli.  

Back to school

First day of school!!! Tuesday the boys headed back to school. So far they are having a really good week and are enjoying school.

New Happenings at the Olsons

Lots of new things happening over here so here is an update (just for you grams).

We started getting eggs! Finding these will never get old. I love seeing what colors we will get for the day. I cant wait to see what colors the other girls will lay once they all start laying.

Found this cute rooster at Gordmans on clearance. Just had to have it to add to the garden. I think its so cute!

Next on the Agenda....

We're celebrating Evans birthday on the 26th this year due to Eli's scheduled (unless he decided to come even earlier) induction on August 3rd. Lots of cleaning and party planning going on here before Sunday. Looks like its going to be a HOT one on Sunday.
After the party on Sunday we will be getting ready for Eli to arrive. We're ready we just need to pack a few more thing and we will be all set. Hard to believe in less than 2 weeks we will be a family of 6!!

Coop

The run is done! Well it was and then we decided to add clear panels to the roof so now its white and clear (every other) not shown here.

Sweet Pinterest inspired Feeders! They love them and so do I. Less mess and super cheap!

The chicken coop is done and it looks amazing. Andy installed power tonight so we have lights and a fan in there. I can not wait till we get eggs I am thinking skittles, Goldie Hawn and oreo2 will start laying soon. The others will likely not lay till fall or next year.

Baby Chicks

The baby chicks have arrived! They were delivered to our house just before lunch by a friend that saw my post on Facebook.

We got our chicken coop today! Now the hard part, finding 4 chickens to put in it. We may have to order them through the mail if we cant find some locally. I am so excited to have chickens. Next on my wish list is bees but that's an expensive hobby and to moms point, I can buy A LOT of honey for the cost of the bees and the materials to get started.

Grow baby Grow! UPDATE

I was doing some research on plants and gardens and came across an article about the dangers of using cinder block for gardens (which is the new thing all over pinterest and gardening websites), the article talked about all the dangers of doing this because the blocks release a toxic chemical that can cause cancer, birth defects, etc.... So I got scared and had Eric read the article and we decided to run to Papa Earls for some scrap wood. I loved the idea of the blocks but the article scared the crap out of me and I would rather be safe than sorry. I am by no means an expert so if you have a block garden do your research and make your own decision.

Buddies!

We got together on Saturday with my friend Kelly and Kayla and here are all our kiddos! Plus 2 more to come (Kayla is expecting #4 as well).

Grow baby grow!

We planted our first vegetable garden.... thanks to Pinterest for the cheap and easy idea! We had the block up in the shed so all we needed was dirt and plants. If it fails were not out much time or money. We planted yellow peppers, yellow beans, carrots (not likely to make it), sugar peas and lettuce. Since its our first time were bound to learn what "not" to do for next time. We also planted squash but in a different spot since we ran out of space.
